    Obtain Permit

An asbestos removal permit is needed when you want to remove your asbestos at home by yourself. Secure the right documents first before you proceed with the work.

    Post Signs

Signs must be used to warn members of your family as well as other people that you are currently removing asbestos in your home. Along the side of the house where removal is to occur, lay a six-foot wide strip of 6 mil sheet plastic long. It is advisable to work in the shade so that the wetted sliding will not dry up.

You can also lay down an additional six foot by six foot piece of plastic sheet in a convenient spot next to the plastic strip along the wall to create an entrance/exit zone.

Cover Up Well and Wet the Area

You must use your disposable coveralls and also put goggles, gloves, boots, and respirators equipped with HEPA filers.  About 10 square feet of siding must be hosed down. You should also mix 1 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with water and put in a spray bottle or in a garden pump sprayer.

     Start Removal

To minimize breakage, remove pieces by cutting nail head or pulling nails. Carefully lift siding pieces using pry tool to expose nail head if necessary. Immediately wet the broken or cracked areas with the pint size spray bottle or garden pump sprayer if siding begins to crumble or crack. The removed siding must be lowered to the ground and keep all debris on the plastic strip and keep on wetting it.

    Remove Siding Pieces

Put contaminated materials and wet debris in sturdy containers such as cardboard boxes or burlap slacks. The boxed should then be sealed in one or more layers of 6mil plastic. It can also be inserted into an asbestos waste disposal bag.

    Double It Up

In pre marked 6mil asbestos waste disposal bags, wrap or double bag other filled containers. First is twist the top of each filled bag and bend twisted part in half and seal it with duct tape. Use 6mil plastic and make sure all seams are sealed using duct tape if containers are to be wrapped rather than bagged. Each sealed package must have an asbestos warning label attached to it.

    Clean and Remove Debris

After the removal of asbestos, clean the area properly and dispose the waste materials and debris properly. Never attempt to use vacuum, you can use wet rags instead.
